VIRTUES OF A

CFS VOLUNTEER

The eight-pointed star is the traditional insignia of the SA Country Fire Service (CFS), formerly known as the Emergency Fire Service (EFS).

The star is not unique to the CFS as it is recognised by fire services all over the world.

It is otherwise referred to as the Cross of Saint John which originally emerged from the Maltese Cross.

Used by the Knights of Saint John during the Crusades in Jerusalem, the points on the Maltese Cross represented eight different virtues of Knighthood:

•    Tact
•    Loyalty
•    Dexterity
•    Observation
•    Sympathy
•    Explicitness
•    Gallantry
•    Perseverance

Over time, firefighters have adopted these same virtues bringing about a commonality between fire services all over the world.

In most cases the only difference between fire service insignias is the centrepiece, which is specific to the organisation.

The CFS Star is seen on the official uniform worn by volunteers and staff.

However, the CFS also has a corporate logo, which represents the State in Australia in which it serves and is displayed on all vehicles and infrastructure.

CFS Heritage Committee

Fire services all around Australia are making great achievements in preserving the physical reminders of their firefighting heritage.

At a meeting held in 2006 between CFS and CFSVA, volunteers and staff, a committee was formed to investigate how to best preserve the significant heritage of the CFS.

From this meeting a working party was formed comprising of the following members:
Rex Hall, President CFSVA SE Branch, Working Party Chairman
Wayne Byrne, CFS employee responsible for the roll out of new appliances and disposal of those being retired.
Wayne Ellard and John Forster, CFSVA representatives
Advisors:
Euan Ferguson, CFS Chief Officer
Ken Schutz, CFSVA State President

Already the working party has taken delivery of several former CFS vehicles and ancillary equipment suitable for historic preservation. Pictured below was the party’s first donation that is hoped to one day be restored to working order and perhaps even used like Clare’s former EFS “Blitz” was in the main arena of the Royal Adelaide Show.

A number of storage sites across the State have been identified and negotiations are taking place for long-term occupancy.

If you would like to know more about the project or perhaps even get involved or make a donation please contact Rex Hall on 0417 081 560.
